Salar de Uyuni
At 10,582 square kilometers and and altitude of 3,656 meters rests the world’s largest salt flat Saltar de Uyuni. According to Aymara legend the mountains Tunupa, Kusku and Kusina surrounding the Saltar were giant people. Tunupa and Kusku were a married couple until Kusku became besotted with Kusina and left Tunupa heartbroken. Tunupa began to cry while breastfeeding her son and when those tears mixed with the milk from her breast they began to form what is now known as the salt flats of Uyuni. Today Saltar de Uyuni sits amongst the very top South America’s most popular tourist destinations and due to its spectacular size never sees that overcrowded peak season problem that other destinations such as Machu Picchu and Mitad del Mundo can often experience.
